Injuries resulting from the manual handling of objects and materials with sharp edges are common in the engineering industry. Data from firms show that as many as a third of all injuries recorded are caused by cuts from sharp metal during handling.”– HSE Guide to handling sharp metal information sheet (engineering sheet no.16)
The HSE advises that wherever possible manual handling of sharp edged objects should always be avoided and also wherever possible sharp edges should be engineered or machined away.
Unfortunately there are many situations especially during small batch production runs where the manual handling of sheet metal and other sharp edged objects is unavoidable.
In these situations the HSE advises that suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be provided to and worn by workers to protect them from any identified dangers.
